North America's First Unencapsulated Mass-Timber Hospital

Hospitals have long stood as
paradoxes—places of healing that, by design, strain the health of the planet. At odds with the Hippocratic promise to “First, do no harm,” their carbon-intensive construction and high energy demands call for a new way forward. As the first unencapsulated mass-timber acute care hospital in North America, what may be Canada's most energy efficient hospital, and one of the lowest carbon acute care facilities in the world, the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital seeks to set a new precedent in Ontario Healthcare and the sector at large. A precedent that demonstrates we can build better, smarter, and greener to deliver world-class healthcare and deep sustainability without compromise to either.
Learning Objectives
1. Identify key elements in the development of place-based design solutions.
2. Learn how mass-timber may be incorporated into health facility design as a low-carbon structural material, including common concerns such as fire safety and infection control.
3. Identify integrated sustainability and resiliency elements that can complement healthcare operations.
4. Determine a path forward related to challenges in innovating in their respective healthcare design projects.
