COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Presented By: David Fujiwara, OAA, Architect
CEU: 2.0 Structured Learning Hours
Nearly 10 years ago, the OAA committed to retrofitting its Toronto
headquarters as systems reached their end of life and extensive repairs
were needed. Recognizing an opportunity to show how existing buildings
can be improved to take climate action, OAA Council determined to reach
net-zero carbon. It initiated a deep energy retrofit and interior
renovation of 111 Moatfield, led by David Fujiwara Architect. More than
five years later, the building's ongoing success proves that ambitious,
climate-resilient targets can be achieved in even the most challenging
designs, without starting from scratch.
Using the OAA headquarters as a case study, the session -- including a
walk through of the Association's building led by David himself -- will
share insights from the initial design decisions right through to the
successful operation of a net-zero building. This Structured Learning
opportunity will examine mechanical systems, lighting, interior
redesign, and other aspects of the building's renewal and continued
operation.
Following a brief formal learning session, participants will take a
guided tour and get an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at 111
Moatfield.
Please note that to keep these sessions focused and efficient,
there is a strict cap for attendance. Only those who have preregistered
and paid the fee will be admitted. Thank you in advance for your
cooperation in this regard.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Understand energy modelling, the importance of net-zero carbon, and how to create energy to offset usage
2. Understand embodied energy and the importance of retrofitting and adaptive reuse of existing building stock
3. Understand energy-efficient materials and systems for heating, cooling, and lighting
4. Understand the benefits of open and flexible office arrangements to support diverse uses
