Join a local professional docent and storyteller on a captivating journey through Ottawa’s historic Sparks Street—one of the oldest streets in the city and North America’s first pedestrian mall. Explore Ottawa’s rich history and impressive national monuments, showcasing key landmarks and statues that celebrate Canada’s cultural and historical significance. As you walk through this historic corridor, stop at iconic sites such as the National War Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Lord Stanley’s Gift, and the National Holocaust Memorial. Learn about the architectural evolution of Ottawa, the stories behind these monuments, and their significance in Canada’s journey toward nationhood. This immersive experience blends heritage, art, and architecture, offering a unique perspective on Ottawa’s role as Canada’s capital.

This session is Level 3 (Moderately Active). Dress for weather conditions and wear comfortable footwear and clothing (including a hat for sun protection). Consider bringing a refillable water bottle, high-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses, and your camera.

Please note: Participants will gather and depart from the Kreitmaker Experiential Learning Dispatch Hub located in the Conference Lounge.

Learning Objectives
1. Gain insights into the evolution of Sparks Street from its origins to its status as North America’s first pedestrian mall.
2. Discover the significance of key national monuments, including the National War Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the National Holocaust Memorial, and learn about their symbolic importance to Canadians of all backgrounds.
3. Examine the architectural styles of prominent buildings along Sparks Street, such as the Imperial Bank, the Bank of Canada, and Christ Church Cathedral.
4. Explore the history and stories behind various statues and memorials scattered along Sparks Street and understand their role in recognizing diverse contributions to Canadian society.
