4.00 ConEd Learning Hours
8:30a.m.-12:00p.m.
Hosted by Brampton Brick Ltd.
This guided facility experience has two main components for each participant. First, there is a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing of both standard and lightweight concrete block using Carboclave technology. Participants will see how carbon dioxide is permanently sequestered into concrete masonry units (CMUs) during production, reducing embodied carbon while maintaining structural performance. They will gain a better understanding of what materials are used in the manufacturing process and how the finished products is made.
Then, the hands-on portion of the tour will be led by a team of experts from both the Ontario Masonry Training Centre (OMTC) and the Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC). Participants will receive a brief technical review on how to properly design and detail masonry structures as well as see a demonstration on how to use all the tools of the trade to build your very own concrete block wall assembly. The total experience includes transportation to and from the facility, a safety briefing, a comprehensive walkthrough of the production process, and a live demo. This session offers a practical perspective to the technical case study. This session will be offsite and involve walking and moderate activity. Dress for weather conditions and wear comfortable clothing (including a hat for sun protection). Closed-toed footwear is mandatory in the manufacturing facility. Safety glasses can be provided. Consider bringing a refillable water bottle, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and your camera.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the manufacturing process for concrete block, including key quality control measures.
2. Explain how Carboclave Technology sequesters CO2 within concrete masonry units and assess its impact on embodied carbon reduction.
3. Evaluate the role of low carbon concrete block in sustainable building strategies and green building rating systems.
4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of block wall assembly, including mortar application and alignment principles, through a guided hands on exercise.

Registrants will meet at the Kreitmaker Experiential Learning Departure Hub to take a shuttle bus to the destination. Arrival back is expected for 12:30 pm. Registrants are still able to register for Sponsored Learning sessions, which include lunch.
