Inside Math 4 - A Tour of Sustainable Innovation

5/14/2026|EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING|STRUCTURED

3.50 ConEd Learning Hours
2:00p.m.-5:30p.m.

This is a walking tour. Activity level is moderately active. Please note: this is a construction site. Full PPE and safety equipment is required to join this tour (Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Safety Shoes and High Visibility Garments). Shirts with sleeves and long pants are recommended.

Take a guided tour of the construction site for Math 4, the University of Waterloo’s last new-build on its historic ring-road campus. The tour highlights adaptive reuse of the 1980s Davis Centre and connections to the 1960s Math & Computer building—preserving cherished green space, while creating a bold new gateway entry to campus. Passive design, light-touch natural ventilation, and math research server “green-room” heat-recovery systems create a net-zero heart for this world-renowned math faculty.

Learning Objectives
1. Learn about the construction of a new heart for a world-class math faculty.
2. Understand campus gateway design on a challenging site.
3. Gain strategies for light-touch natural ventilation systems with solar chimneys.
4. Explore the balance of “bold” and “light” moves in the pursuit
of low carbon.
