Achieving Universal Accessibility in Heritage Buildings

May 16, 2025 | CONTINUING EDUCATION | STRUCTURED

1.50 ConEd Learning Hours
8:30 am - 10:00 am

The Centre Block project in Ottawa is one of the largest rehabilitation projects in the world. At the onset, stakeholders signed on to the mandate that the design would meet highest standards for universal accessibility. The intent was to exceed current standards, where deemed possible to enhance dignity and inclusivity for both visitors and occupants. This presentation highlights how these goals are achieved in a historic building and balanced with the demands for heritage preservation.

Learning Objectives

1. What are the building codes and accessibility standards applicable to federal projects.
2. How is a robust heritage framework established that can guide the design process on existing and historic buildings.
3. How are design decisions made that balance seemingly conflicting goals between accessibility and heritage conservation.
4. How can innovative design solutions and new technologies be applied in heritage buildings.
